Eating Healthy But Feeling Worse? This Might Be Why!

đŸ„Š You’ve cut out the junk, loaded up on veggies, fruits, and whole foods
but now you feel worse? Bloating, cramping, fatigue? It’s not in your head—there’s a surprising reason behind it.

The culprit? Fiber. Yep, that “healthy” fiber might be wreaking havoc on your gut. Let’s break down why.

The Hidden Side of Healthy Foods: FODMAPs

Many fruits and veggies contain a type of fiber called FODMAPs—that’s short for Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides, and Polyols (say that three times fast!). These are short-chain carbs that can ferment in your gut, causing gas, bloating, and other digestive issues.

Normally, FODMAPs aren’t a big deal. But if you’ve got an overgrowth of bacteria or yeast in your small intestine—a condition called SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth) or SIFO (Small Intestinal Fungal Overgrowth)—those critters feed on FODMAPs like it’s an all-you-can-eat buffet.

The result? đŸš« Bloating, diarrhea, cramping, heartburn, and that awful “I’m full after two bites” feeling.

Common “Healthy” Foods That Could Be Causing Trouble:

  • Garlic & Onions: These are FODMAP bombs, especially raw. If these flare you up, that’s a big red flag for SIBO.
  • Avocados: Yep, even these gut-friendly favorites can cause issues for some.
  • Broccoli, Cauliflower, and Cabbage: While technically low-FODMAP in small amounts, they can still trigger symptoms in sensitive guts.

What to Do About It: The Low-FODMAP Reset

If you suspect FODMAPs are your issue, here’s the plan:

1ïžâƒŁ Try a Low-FODMAP Diet: Eliminate high-FODMAP foods for 2-4 weeks and see how you feel. If your symptoms improve? Bingo—you’ve found a major trigger.

2ïžâƒŁ BUT—Don’t Stay Low-FODMAP Forever!

This isn’t a lifelong diet. While cutting FODMAPs can ease symptoms, it doesn’t fix the root cause. Plus, long-term low-FODMAP diets can starve the good bacteria in your large intestine, messing with your immunity and overall gut health.

3ïžâƒŁ Find the Root Cause: If FODMAPs trigger your symptoms, it’s time to dig deeper. You may have SIBO, SIFO, or another underlying gut imbalance that needs addressing. Work with a practitioner to identify and treat the root cause.

My Personal Experience

When I was healing my own gut, I could eat avocados without any issues, but a small serving of garlic? Total disaster. The key is figuring out your unique sensitivities—everyone’s gut reacts differently.

The Bottom Line

If you’ve already cut out the usual suspects—gluten, dairy, corn, soy, and processed sugar—but still feel off, FODMAPs might be the missing link. A temporary low-FODMAP diet can be a powerful tool to uncover hidden triggers and start your gut healing journey.
