The #1 Hydration Mistake That’s Destroying Your Gut Health

You’re drinking water to stay healthy right?

… but what if your water is actually making you sick?

Most people don’t realize that their tap water—and even bottled water—is loaded with toxins like heavy metals, hormones, antibiotics, pesticides, parasites, plastics, and even radiation. Yikes!

So, I want you to ask yourself this question – Is your water polluting you or is it diluting you? Because the water you drink should be helping your body flush out toxins—not adding more toxins to your body!

In this article, I’m going to break down exactly why your water quality matters, the best ways to filter it, and why the wrong water could be wrecking your digestion, hydration, and overall health.

The Real Truth About Water & Digestion

One of the most important things you can do for your digestion and detoxification is to properly hydrate. But not all water is created equal.

💡 If you're constipated, your body is holding onto toxins that should be eliminated. Hydration is essential for moving waste out efficiently so those toxins don’t build up.

💡 If you’re dealing with loose stools or diarrhea, this can be a sign of too much toxicity in your system. And to make matters worse, you’re likely losing hydration, electrolytes, and key minerals, making the problem even worse.

What Kind of Water Should You Avoid?

🚫 Tap Water: It’s not just “water”—it can contain heavy metals, hormones, antibiotics, pesticides, parasites, plastics, and even radioactive elements like radium, uranium, and radon.

Curious about what’s lurking in your tap water? Head over to the Environmental Working Group (EWG) to check out the toxins in your local water supply. When I checked my zip code, I was shocked to find several serious contaminants far exceeding safe limits—and I mean way over.

I found 16 cancer-causing agents above acceptable limits  in my water. Here’s just a few:

  • Arsenic: 361x
  • Bromodichloromethane: 298x
  • Chloroform: 57x
  • Dibromochloromethane: 130x
  • Haloacetic acids (HAA5): 196x
  • Haloacetic acids (HAA9): 579x
  • Total trihalomethanes: 373x
  • Even Uranium: 6x

💧 Let that sink in: This is the water many of us drink daily, thinking it’s “safe.” It’s worth checking your area—you might be surprised by what’s in your glass.

🚫 Plastic Bottled Water: Not only is it often just glorified tap water, but the water leeches harmful chemicals from the plastic that damage your gut microbiome and disrupt your hormones. Not to mention for those of us that leave our plastic water bottles in our hot cars - we are getting an added dose of these plastics straight into our system.

Now Let’s Talk About What You Should Drink Instead:

💧 At minimum, choose filtered water.

But not all filters are created equal. A Brita filter won’t cut it—you need something that actually removes toxins like:

✔ Reverse Osmosis Systems can be a great choice– They do remove a large number of contaminants. A Berkey filter is a great countertop option, or you can look into a whole-house reverse osmosis system.

💧 The Best Option? Distilled Water.

I switched my family to distilled water after learning that even my expensive whole-house reverse osmosis system wasn’t removing radiation elements.

Here’s how distillation works:

  • It boils the water into steam, leaving behind ALL the toxins, heavy metals, and contaminants.
  • The steam re-condenses into purified water, free of impurities.
  • The result? Pure H₂O—without the junk.

If you’ve never used a water distiller, you’d be shocked at the sediment and gunk it leaves behind after purifying water. I distill my reverse osmosis water from my expensive reverse osmosis system, and I still end up with a large amount of sediment at the bottom of my water distiller that needs to be cleaned out.

Some people worry that demineralizing their water will lead to osteoporosis. This will only happen if you are not taking in enough minerals through your food. The benefit of removing the junk in the water you’re drinking far outweighs the risk in my opinion, and you can easily add in a high quality mineral supplement to replace those low quality minerals with high quality minerals your body can actually use.  I like to use CT Minerals from CellCore, but any high quality mineral supplement will work.

My Personal Water Setup & Recommendations

There are high-end water distillers that cost thousands of dollars. If you want a premium system, then great! There are several to choose from.

But if you're looking for a more budget-friendly option, I personally use the Megahome Countertop Stainless Steel Water Distiller. At the time of this recording, you can get them at Amazon for just $289. I have no affiliation with the company—I just genuinely recommend it.

My daily hydration routine:

✔ I fill up my 64 oz stainless steel water bottle in the morning.

✔ I aim to drink at least half within two hours of waking up to hydrate after sleeping.

✔ I refill it and make sure I drink the full amount by the end of the day.

Some factors that influence your hydration needs are:

✔ Male or female

✔ Age

✔ Climate you live in

✔ Activity level

✔ Metabolic Rate

✔ Diet (protein, sodium, fiber, alcohol, caffeine intake)

Simple Hydration Rules to Keep Your Gut (and Body) Happy:

✔ Start Your Morning Right:

Drink 16-32 oz of water first thing in the morning to rehydrate after sleep and kick start digestion. Add a squeeze of lemon juice and a pinch of sea salt to boost electrolytes and digestion. (Tip: Use a straw if you’re adding lemon to protect your teeth—I’ve done this for years without any issues!)

✔ Hydrate Before Meals, Not During:

Sip water 20-30 minutes before meals to support stomach acid and enzyme production. But skip the large gulps during your meal—it can dilute your digestive juices.

✔ Know the Signs of Dehydration:

If you’re feeling constipated, dizzy when standing, fatigued, or have brain fog, you might be dehydrated. Add a pinch of sea salt to your water for a quick electrolyte boost.

✔ Loose Stools? Prioritize Electrolytes:

Loose stools can deplete your minerals. Replenish with electrolytes to stay balanced.

✔ Check Your Urine Color:

Aim for a pale yellow (like lemonade).

  • Dark yellow? Drink more water.
  • Clear? You’re overdoing it—cut back a little.

✔ How Much Water Should You Drink?

A simple rule: Drink half your body weight (in lbs.) in ounces.

For example, if you weigh 160 lbs, aim for 80 oz of water daily.

Water is Your Body’s Detox Tool

Paul Chek said, “The Solution to Pollution is Dilution.” To reduce your body’s pollution, make sure you:

💧 Drink high-quality water, preferably distilled.

💧 Hydrate consistently.

💧 Help your body flush out toxins—instead of taking in more toxins.

Your cells, organs, and digestion will thank you.
